The Hosts of Halloween

When shadows fall The churchyard wall Reflects the setting sun, Now day is done And night’s begun Beware the banshee’s call.   As twilight fades To deeper shades That cloak the land in gloom, By vault and tomb And catacomb An eerie calm pervades.   ‘Til comes the time For midnight’s chime To stir the waiting hosts, When restless ghosts Desert their posts And from their barrows climb.   In dead of night At All Saint’s height While mortals seek their sleep, The dark is deep When spectres creep Towards the dawn’s pale light.   From side to side The spirits glide Across the hallowed ground, Without a sound The wraiths abound And phantom horsemen ride.   So take good care All those who dare Defy the curfew’s knell, When tolling bell Rings straight from Hell On Halloween – beware.
