We wanted to take a moment to share a vibrant, stylish and eye grabbing animation we created to help spread awareness of men’s health (for Movember).
Our motivation for creating this animation was simple …to help a good cause! We decided to do this via the only means we know best; design and animation. Our team gets together this time every year to find ways to express our passion for design and animation, and create something that pushes us both technically and creatively. Our drive was to learn and improve, to create something outside of the usual client restrictions and red tape, and to try new styles and animation/production techniques. We are very proud of the result and we hope you can appreciate our effort.
The animation itself is a combination of rotoscoping and cel animation. We hand-painted over 500 individual frames in Photoshop, and combined all of the image sequences in After Effects. Colouring, grading and all the sound and effects were then applied afterwards. The concept was born from the song ‘Electric man’ by Rival Sons (which we cut into a supercharged 40-second piece) and the old Cassius music video ‘I love you so’ (the one with the singing mouths). The ‘edgy’ style was inspired by highlighter pens, and developed using vibrant ‘electric’ colours. The four characters were based on ourselves and represent the four members of a rock band; vocals, guitarist, bassist and drummer …each with a unique look and moustache.
