Being from the city All my life, It feels like Flight from Urban strife At steady clip Beyond the forest wall Tall pine And eucalypt, Passing south As the sun fades Through countryside, Wide-eyed At stands of oak Ghost-gums clustered Mustering sheep Sleep beneath Their dying shade. Struck by the Weight of Stillness And the Silence Of the night Outside, Here I am Wheeling through The dead sun light, Feeling all the Bite Of country air Bare and clean, Under the diamond eyes Of clear night sky I’m Fleeing over Flat and ridges Across the smooth Bellies of bridges As Autumn rivers Race and shiver Their way Downward Homeward soon, As cattle brace Against the moon.
